Indoor Holiday Flowering Plants We Adore

Poinsettia

Why we Love them: immediate nostalgic holiday feeling, bright and bold foliage that just goes hand in hand with the time of year. Stay traditional with a bold red or explore a range of colours like pink, white or even marbled.

Notes on Care: Funnily enough these are actually tropical plants–bright indirect light, consistent watering and warm temperatures will keep this favourite of the holiday flowering plants happy. Note, that both children and pets should stay away owing to the plant’s toxicity levels.

Make it Memorable: We are having a moment with metallics: pop your poinsettia in a silver urn or a bronze pot with an aged patina. Alternatively, pair with porcelain, something like blue and white ware or Chinoiserie for a lovely compliment.

Paperwhites

Why we Love them: These are tiny bulbs that you force yourself into flowering. They are a bright, delicate white and incredibly fragrant. Growing from bulb essentially means you can put them in any kind of vase, vessel, or container–even a vintage gravy boat!

Notes on Care: The best way to start them is with 100% sphagnum moss or just water. The trick it to just ensure the bottom of the bulbs touch water when started. Then you give them about 2-4 weeks before they bloom if placed in a bright and sunny spot.

Make it Memorable: In your first year you’ll learn if you love or hate the smell of paperwhites. The fragrance is very strong, and some report, rather than something lovely it reminds some of dirty socks among other unpleasant things. But if you enjoy the scent, it will have long-lasting emotional impact on you.

Cyclamen

Why we Love them: Unlike many holiday flowering plants, the winter is their blooming time. Complete with delicate, bright florals and heart shaped leaves. They bring a certain charm and architecture to spaces and their festive colours are signify joyful times.

Notes on Care: These indoor holiday plants do best in cooler temperatures and thrive when watered from below. Once the soil is dry water by letting their pots sit in water for 15-30 minutes. Remove any spent blooms.

Make it Memorable: Opt for a natural material for a strong contrast, stone or terracotta bring a layered visual elegance. Rather than working with a single plant, we love using several together for a striking display.

Amaryllis

Why we Love it: Another bulb that you get to enjoy watching grow–with the largest and most dramatic trumpet-shaped flower as your reward for being patient. Available in many colours to bring life and vibrancy to the winter months.

Notes on Care: Bulbs can be planted in sphagnum moss, regular potting soil or forced with water alone. Some can be purchased covered in wax where no further maintenance is required. The speed of growth depends on the brightness of the indirect light playing a major factor.

Make it Memorable: A fun little tradition to start with family, friends or anyone close to you is to purchase bulbs on the same day and see who can coax their amaryllis to flower for Christmas Eve. Or any date of your choosing. A special way to connect with each other over a brilliant holiday flowering botanical.

Holiday Cactus

Why we Love it: A happy and well-taken care of holiday cactus can be passed down through generations. The long-living blooms often make their first appearances right around the time many of us begin decorating. They then stay flowering for 4-6 weeks. They are no fuss and very easy keepers.

Notes on Care: Bright, indirect light and very light watering. If you tend to be slightly neglectful the Holiday Cactus won’t mind. Cooler temperatures in the evenings and increased darkness help the plant know it is time to start blooming.

Make it Memorable: When in full flower, place in a higher location or simply raise slightly to help the cascading florals and foliage take center stage.
