1. Statement Trees
Likely, the most impactful kind of houseplant. Having a tree adorn a part of your room is invigorating; a statuesque tree improves cognition, oxygenates and purifies the air and contributes to an overall mood boost. If you want to add a touch of lushness and luxury, introduce a fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata). Looking to introduce warmth and softness? An established black olive tree (Terminalia buceras) will do the trick. Moreover, it brings a sense of the Mediterranean, especially if housed in a terracotta or stone vessel. Lastly, our selection of large statement trees isn’t complete without including the Umbrella plant (Schefflera arboricola). Excellent for beginners from a care perspective; the leaves here are dynamic and interesting, almost resembling a floral shape.
2. Peacock Plant (Calathea orbifolia)
Sometimes referred to as ‘prayer plants’, this selection is the smallest of our large houseplants, but still when grown in optimum conditions can get quite vast. If you’re all about foliage, look no further. Featuring bright gem-like green leaves with dainty stripes that appear almost metallic. They captivate the eyes and as the mature, the leaves continue to increase in size. Furthermore, new leaves will unfurl slowly for a marvelous display. Calatheas in general are known for their play on colours, but be sure to wipe down their leaves at least once a month for the brightest vegetation.
3. Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa)
Bring the wild, tropical world into your home with this Monstera species. If you’re not limited in space, Monstera deliciosa is for you with its substantial, ornate leaves that are the epitome of paradise. This large houseplant grows quickly and tolerates low light very well, making it versatile in its placement. Unquestionably an exotic-oasis feel awaits you if you opt for this botanical. Ps. Did you know that variegated monsteras are not only exceptionally beautiful but have become a sought-after rarity? Monstera deliciosa ‘Albo Variegata’, for example, is an impressive specimen of variegation (but it comes with a price tag to match its size).
4. Vertical Climbers/Hangers and Plant Walls
Transform a vertical space in your home by taking advantage of climbers or hanging/vining plants. Alternatively, opt to install a plant wall. While the latter can be a rather significant investment, the former can create a similar effect without breaking the bank. For climbers that can be trellised, look to English Ivy (Hedera helix) or the heavenly scented Jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum). Our favourite hangers include pothos and philodendron species, both grow quickly and ‘spill’ of their pots. If placed above eye-level, their cascading greenery will dominate a vertical space creating a kind of ‘living wall’. Now, although a plant wall is a hefty investment, it’s an incredibly rewarding one. Whether small or large, they energize their spaces, purifying the air and positively affecting how you feel.
5. Giant Taro or Elephant Ear (Alocasia macrorhiza)
The common name alone speaks of the size of this large, colossal, over-the-top houseplant. Accordingly, this plant brings the drama. The enormous ‘elephant ear’ leaves are lush and are some of the boldest leaves you’ll find. This plant flourishes in warmer environments with higher humidities (placements near kitchens and bathrooms are ideal as both areas tend to naturally have higher humidities) and in bright-indirect light. Consequently, these botanicals should always be grown in heavy pots to support their size and are considered toxic to cats and children.
Stimulate your senses, revitalize your spaces and enjoy the on-going benefits of introducing greenery into your home. Besides, the thrill of bringing home a new plant is doubled when it’s of sizeable proportion. Trust us, we can confirm.
